William Harrison

Marine Artist

Was born in Ryhope, County Durham, in 1928. At 14 he became a miner at the local colliery, then in 1948 he joined the Royal Navy and became a Chief Petty Officer. Later in his career he joined the Merchant Navy and continued his links with the sea on moving to Pembrokeshire to work as a marine engineer. He is now retired and spends his time painting.

In the English Channel

The first Vanguard. Shown sailing up the English Channel with a contemporary cargo vessel.  She took part in the Armada defeat under the command of sir William Wynter.

The third Vanguard, shown in rough weather near the Medway before being overset.  She was later salvaged.  2nd rate of 1357 tons built in Portsmouth

The seventh Vanguard, an ironclad central battery ship.  Shown about to be rammed in fog by her sister ship 1st September 1875 in the Irish Sea, the only life lost was the Captains dog..

The eighth Vanguard, shown in the North Sea.  The ship blew up suddenly at Scapa Flow in June 1917 with only three survivors.
